JANUARY 2014

A new year beginning!

And a few new items at Minnie's Dried Fruits and Vegetables!

A new strawberry season! Although the weather has not been very cooperative, what with being overcast and cold for most of the days, we have managed to dry some of the tastiest and most fragrant strawberries we have ever prepared.

A new tangerine season is under way as well. Our stock isn't very large yet, but for those of you have been waiting patiently for the new crop, we have a fews boxes ready for your chewing.

We have also taken advantage of the physalis or 7arankash that has appeared on the market a few weeks ago and we have dried a few kilos of it. Why don't you read about physalis/7arankash-if the name rings a bell- under the Article tab and see what you can do with it dried or fresh.

Our dried cherries have been a very successful item this year. Unfortunately we have run out of the pitted cherries, but I have a large stock of cherries with pits and have decided to make cherry jam with them. It is a long and tedious process that is worth every minute of it, as the jam is very tasty, a little tart with a lot of fruit and low in sugar. It reminds me of the sour cherry or weshna jam that we used to find in Egypt a long time ago.

As you know, our products are seasonal, therefore I suggest that you consult our Products & Price list tab to see what is available now in January.   Make your selection and place your order by sending an email to minnies.egypt@gmail.com or calling on

What's New This Month...

Tangerines!

Minnie's delicious Egyptian tangerines are peeled, sliced, and dried in our solar tunnel. These tangerines are as delightful to look at as they are delicious to munch on and come in 75g bags.  These mouth-watering treats are an ideal healthy snack.  Read on to learn more about the wealth of health benefits tangerines offer!

Peas!

A new addition to Minnie's products, these peas are blanched, dried to a crisp and make an ideal vegetable snack.  No salt or preservatives added!

Did You Know That...

Cairo Kitchen (Zamalek and Maadi) and BioShop in Maadi carry a selection of Minnie's Dried Fruits and Vegetables!

Citrus fruits are...
  • packed with vitamin C, an antioxidant that promotes healthy cell function and blood purification.  Vitamin C's antioxidant protection and natural antiseptic properties fight the onset of colds and infections, promote the healing process of wounds, and may reduce incidences of heart disease and certain types of cancer;
  • a significant source of pectin, which increases beneficial microflora in the gut.  This means a healthier digestive system!

Tangerines in particular...
  • contain a fibrous white tissue in between the fruit segments known as lamella.  Lamella is rich in soluble fiber, a key agent to fighting high cholesterol;
  • can combat obesity, as they contain a flavanoid that prevents the build-up of fat in the liver and boosts metabolism.
Oranges in particular...
  • are an excellent source of the minerals folacin, potassium, thiamine, niacin, and magnesium.  These minerals support cell growth, improve muscle and bone health, fight anemia, and boost energy.
  • contain a phytonutrient in their peel that is known to reduce blood pressure and cholesterol.  Dehydrated oranges are an ideal way to get this miraculous nutrient into your body and promoting optimal health.

What's New This Month...

Egyptian Pear Rounds: We cut and dry the crunchy (khashaby) pears with no preservatives or color enhancers. These pears are peeled, cored and dried to a chewy state that brings out their delicate flavor. Try them in khoshaf or right out of the bag, they are a great snack.

Egyptian Mango Slices:  Mango season has just begun. The varieties are coming in one after the other, pleasing the palate and the sense of smell. And we too have begun drying them and making mango fruit rollups. Our fruit rollups have no sugar added and no preservatives; they are 100% natural fruit.

Egyptian Raisins: we use the original Egyptian seedless green/golden grapes (banati) to make these raisins. These raisins are a dark amber color and are sweet and chewy and delicious. Eat them with nuts or add them to cereal, oatmeal, rice or moussaka3a, you will just love them.

What's New This Month...

Egyptian Apricots: We dry these delicious apricots with no preservatives or color enhancers, thus their color is slightly darker, and their taste is still great.

Egyptian Dried Plums:  Also known as prunes. Try them! They are dark and juicy and delicious. We have removed the pits and split them in half for your enjoyment.

Cherries: imported from Lebanon and Syria, pitted, and split in two. We dried them to a chewy state to enhance their flavor.

Khoshaaf Mix: composed of Egyptian apple crescents, apricots, cherries, peaches from Sinaii, prunes, pears and raisins. Soak them in hot water and use for khoshaf (recipe at the end).

Yameesh Mix: very much the same as the Khoshaaf Mix except all the stones and pits have been removed from the apricots, cherries, peaches, and prunes to give you a delicious chewy dried mix for your after iftar snacking enjoyment.
