Goodbye summer

I would like to take a moment to reflect on our experience this summer.

As you may have read, we opened a store in Sahel, Egypt's North Coast, this summer- fifteen producers together, exhibiting and selling their products under one umbrella:  Farmers Market El Sahel 

It was a great experience for all of us partners because we learned about what you like at the beach, and what we can offer you there and how to improve on what we offer.  We learned about sharing space and working together and supporting each other.  We learned that delivery is a must. We learned that word of mouth is very important, and that being featured in  two summer magazines: Cairo to Sahel and Sahel Community Times is the best thing that can happen to us. Our face book page received a few thousand visitors and as many comments and likes. So thank you for being part of our success and thank you for a great summer.

Matrouh figs

Have you tasted the figs this summer? Especially the ones coming from Marsa Matrouh? Well, we have been busy drying figs and making jam. I took the old time favorite fig jam, cut the sugar by 30%

and added a twist of Matrouh to it by using a hint of mint. It turned out to be exquisite! The I replaced the mint with a sprig of homegrown lavender to tease your buds  and that too turned to be really special.

We are also working with Matrouh fig growers and are drying their varieties of figs. You will see them soon at the market. Really really nice flavors.

And the mangoes!! What a color when dried and what an intensive flavor!

Apple crescents: are the famous tart Egyptian apples that appear on the market in late June for a very short period. We extend their shelf life by drying them so that you can enjoy them thorough out the year.

Grapefruit: the pink variety that grows on our land under safe agriculture practices

Peppers: ( out of stock at the moment) sweet bell peppers cut into small pieces and to add to you favorite tomato sauce, salad or feta cheese. pepper flakes this season

5- LE30/BOX:

Apples, yellow apples: peeled and sliced, they make a delicious snack

Fruit Mix: a medley of seasonal fruits to whet your appetite  

Pears: Egyptian khashabi variety whose flavor is intensified with drying

Soup Mix: we have added cut up tomatoes to the blend of grated zucchini, carrots, onions, kale and herbs. Solar dried. Use in soup or tomato sauce for pasta and lasagna. Look for the recipe under the appropriate tab 

6- LE35/BOX:

Banana coins: (out of stock at the moment) Egyptian organic Balaika bananas great for snacks, on yogurt and oats

7- LE40/BOX:

Apricots:  Egyptian, dried in our solar tunnel with no sulfur, no sugar added no preservatives, hence their brown color

Cherries: pitted and split, dried to a chewy bite, great on cereal, in baking and snacking, on yogurt, name it and eat it
Kiwi:  (out of stock at the momnet) imported, tart golden slices, delicious in salads and to snack on
Mango:  we have dried new varieties, great color and texture, and of course very tasty
Mushroom: (out of stock at the moment) white button mushroom, grown by Tarouty Farms, add them to tomato 
Prunes: Egyptian plums , pitted, split and dried. A great addition to your morning cereal

Strawberries: Egyptian, a beautiful color, a wonderful fragrance and a delicious taste

8- JAMS AND MARMALADES: low sugar, vacuum sealed for a longer shelf life

Date Delight: a recipe handed down by my mother, not a jam and not a paste, a delight, serve it with fresh cream

Pink Grapefruit and pomegranate marmalade: a very unusual and tart marmalade made from the best pink grapefruit. LE40 for a 400g jar

Harankash or Physalis jam: a soft a delicious jam, full of pieces of fruit. LE40 for a 400g jar

9- BISCOTTIS:

These twice baked cookies are lactose free and fat free. We use molasses instead of sugar and we add fresh grated ginger, turmeric and blend of Minnie's Dried Fruits which may include raisins, dates, orange pieces or cherry bits. These hard biscottis are great for dunking in your favorite tea or coffee, or just nibbling on them. A box LE25

A dream come true for Minnie's! And a must TRY!!

Ganache, a French Chocolatier in Cairo, agreed to experiment with dipping half a dried fruit in chocolate. He did! In white chocolate, in milk chocolate and in dark chocolate! And the result? A powerful combination of chocolate melting and of fruit bursting with flavor! A must try, even if you think you don't like fruit and chocolate.

In our boxes,  we arrange a mix of our seasonal fruits dipped in one of the 3 chocolates: apples, bananas, dates, mango, pears, kiwi, strawberries dipped in one of the three chocolate flavors. You may also custom order your box: one fruit coated with one chocolate or one fruit with mixed chocolates. Your choice!

Dates:  delicious and a great picker upper

2- LE 20/BOX:

Cherry tomatoes: grown for the export market, and dried in our tunnel, a real treat

Tomatoes: dried just right and a wonderful red color. Add them to sauces for pasta, or to olive oil and garlic

3- LE 25/BOX:

Apples, Ana: finally the first Egyptian apples are available. Their season is very short so we are working as fast as we can to stock up on this tart apple. We cut it in crescent shapes and they are chewy and delicious

Grapefruit: the pink variety that grows on our land

Oranges: sweet navel orange slices, great to munch on or in a scup of tea or a free salad

Pepper: red and yellow bell peppers are back in our stock, use them in any tomato sauce or in gravy, add them to soup or salad, they add color and flavor 

4- LE30/BOX:

Apples, yellow Syrian apples: peeled and sliced, they make a delicious snack

Fruit Mix: seasonal mix  

Mandarines: cut with the skin in beautiful orange colored rounds
