The Slice

February 2016

It isnt February yet, in fact it is still January, the 27th. But it has been raining for the past two days and it is very cold. I cant go to the farm, the roads are so soggy I may not be able to come home. We have nothing on the dryer at the farm, it has been sunless and so cold, nothing dries. The women working at Minnie's are sad because they like to go to work and can't. They can't even step out of their homes the ground is so wet.

So being at home, I decided to work on February's letter and be ahead of myself this month.

Today I had a great experience. My partner at THE SPACE, Kerima, and I were invited by the second grade teachers at NCBIS, New Cairo British International School, to talk to their students about the new 3 Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, a topic their homeroom teachers have been discussing for some time.

We headed off to NCBIS early in the morning fog and rain to go talk to these young people about the concept of THE SPACE , our consignment store in Maadi,  and Minnies products.

I was delighted to be back in a classroom setting! We had about 40 some kids to talk to, and we had a wonderful time asking them questions, listening to their input and suggestions and sharing ideas.

What delighted it us most is that we were doing exactly what Minnies and THE SPACE set out to do: get children involved and thinking about the new 3 Rs. And maybe someday it will catch on and they will take it by storm.

Thank you so much teachers and TAs of 2d graders at NCBIS for giving us the opportunity to show how one can apply the new 3 Rs in every day life!

What's new at Minnie's this month?

  • The new crop of Harankash, that Egyptian Cape Gooseberry, is waiting to be dried. I have already started with harankash jam, using this beautiful yellow fruit and the result is tasty and tart!
  • The strawberries are delicious this year and we are trying to dry as many as we can in order to provide you with dried strawberries long after the season is over
  • We are drying oranges and tangerines and tomatoes too. O's pasta, a restaurant in Zamalek, has discovered our beautiful red jewels - as he calls our tomatoes-which he uses to make a pesto!! And Eish & Malh, a restaurant downtown Cairo on Adly street prepared a special menu  for the Slow Food event that took place of January 22 and used our strawberries, oranges and kiwis in a delicious parfait
  • We are adding solar dried tomatoes to our soup mix. The red color of the tomatoes is so pleasing to the eye and of course the taste is enhanced
  • Ganache, the French Chocolatier in Maadi, and Minnies are getting ready for Valentines. We will have our special chocolate hearts filled with our dried fruits ready for you and your loved ones
  • And last but not least we will be at as many farmers markets as we can handle
So follow us and come see us!
